Abstract white oil plastic, 2010, 55 x 80 x 15cm
Melted “oil plastic’
Stefan Gross’s abstract white oil plastic, distracts viewers from the political connotations of the plastic materials with his highly distorted and colourful sculpture .
Through the use of heat guns, artist distorted industrial plastic to form the abstract and colourful work. In the Process, he developed a material on his own which he uses predominantly in most of his sculptures, oil plastic, the result of dying industrial plastic with oil paints. He works with plastic as he considers plastic a honest material that changes under varied conditions. The uniquely synthesized plastic is translucent and behaves at a relatively low temperature, increasing the viscosity of the material when subjected to heat.
Through his colourful works he metaphorises the fall of a society based on growth. Apart from the highly distorted forms, the colour palette in his sculptures is bright and stays true to the original colours of the object. This cheerful and light-hearted juxtaposition of plastic in Gross’s work informed a big part of my studio development.
It influenced the colour palette of the plastic materials I was working with. Also the process of distorting the manufactured form of the material became a key component in the project.
My project shares a lot in common with the artist, not only in terms of the subject matter, plastic. But also the colourful and playful aspect of the sculptures. I really like how intricate the details of the melted pieces were, and I hope to be able to achieve a visual effect as such.
