ABOUT

Seeking Plastopia seeks to defamiliarise ubiquitous plastics to distract viewers from the many passive representations that has long been associated with the material. This representations include the environmental concerns due to increasing number of non bio-degradable debris floating in the oceans and the range of plasticizers added to plastic that are known to induce harmful effects. With addition to that, the values of superficiality, versatility and impermanence contributes to the mass consumption the material. Instead, this project is chooses to focus on the materiality of the medium and its utopian dimensions.

The practice of the project is particularly driven by the unique properties of thermoplastics such as its protean adaptability to imitate different materials like fabric, wood, clay, marble stone and even metal. Besides that, it’s bright and vibrant aesthetics also serves as a driving force to the project. The most intriguing aspect is the malleability and synthesizable properties. The viscosity and state of thermoplastic changes at low temperatures allowing the material to develop its own form and also forced into any desired shape without the release of toxic fumes which was a main concern in the project.
