Josh Blackwell collects plastic bags and embroiders visually engaging geometric patterns on them. He began collecting the bags off the streets and households 6 years ago as an exercise for environmental conservation which later evolved into his studio practice.
" Plastic bags are the second most common form of litter in the world after cigarette butts. Their degraded status and ubiquitous presence are fascinating to me, attempting to balance between convenience and excess. Quickly used and then discarded, their textured surfaces wear the remains of physical activity like dirty laundry left on the floor."
I find the artist's motivation behind this project similiar to mine. The way he creates these aesthetically pleasing patterns embracing the original form of the material serves as a huge inspiration for my project.
